The Getty Museum in Malibu, California
No long ago, the Art and Archaeology World was debating the possible devolution to Peruvian authorities of many Peruvian pieces exhibited in the Yale University Gallery of Art (you can read the theArtWolf's article in this link). Now, a new announcement has reinitiated the debate: the Getty Museum has give in to the pressures by the Italian authorities and has announced his intention of returning to Italy 52 works of art -many of them of exceptional importance to its collections.
So the Getty Centre is already part of the large list of Museums (Metropolitan of New York, British Museum of London , Michael C. Carlos of Atlanta.) that have been forced to return a substantial part of its collections to the country of origin -Italy, Greece, Egypt.- of the pieces.
Worrying times for the western Museums, and potentially disastrous for the antiquities market, whose usual buyers can now take the decision of investing in more risky fields.
