The New 7 Wonders have been elected in an online poll After years of controversies, and with 90 millions online votes, the ultra-publicised campaign to elect the New 7 Wonders of the World organized by www.new7wonders.com has finished]]>

July 8th 2007 – The End. After years of controversies, and with 90 millions online votes, the ultra-publicised campaign to elect “the New 7 Wonders of the World” organized by www.new7wonders.com has finished. The full list -in random order- is:

– The Great Wall of China

– Petra (Jordan)

– The Statue of the Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil )

– Machu Picchu (Peru)

– Chichen Itzá

– The Colosseum in Rome

– Taj Mahal (India)

Theartwolf.com respects the opinions of the million voters who took part in this online poll (no, we have not voted), and we congratulate Mr. Bernard Weber for the success of his initiative, but we will never consider the 7 previously mentioned buildings as “the new 7 wonders of the world”. In addition to highly debatable opinions (face facts: the 5000 years of History of the Pyramids in Giza have been forgotten, while the souveniresque Christ Redeemer in Corcovado is included), the initiative of new7wonders.com is, as almost all polls organized in Internet, highly debatable because only those people with access to the Internet can vote. The UNESCO has published a devastating press release about this fact:

“In order to avoid any damaging confusion, UNESCO wishes to reaffirm that there is no link whatsoever between UNESCO’s World Heritage programme, which aims to protect world heritage, and the current campaign concerning “The New 7 Wonders of the World” (.) The list of the “7 New Wonders of the World” will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the internet and not the entire world. This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public” Source: UNESCO

And we have to add to all this the fact of that many voters could be logically tempted to vote for the candidates located at their own country, which means more votes for the most populated countries, or with more internet users. However, the initiative can even be laudable for its intention of encouraging people to learn more about the World Patrimony.
