ADORN YOUR DINING TABLE WITH PICASSO FOR AS LITTLE AS £300 AN ITEM AT CHRISTIE’S SOUTH KENSINGTON ]]>

Christie’s South Kensington will be celebrating Pablo Picasso’s birthday with a sale devoted to Picasso Ceramics on Thursday 25 October 2007 at 2pm. With some estimates starting from as little as £300, it really is possible to bring Picasso’s dynamic style to any room of the home. Comprising over 130 examples of prints, ceramics, metalwork and tapestries the sale spans a time period of nearly seventy years and charts Picasso’s explorations in the printmaking field in the early 1900s through to his burst of creativity in ceramic workshops up until his death in 1973.

FOR THE TABLE
Pablo Picasso spent part of the last 20 years of his life working in the Madoura ceramic studio in Vallauris, on the Mediterranean coast of France. During that time he produced thousands of unique ceramics. Picasso allowed the owners, George and Suzanne Ramie, to make and sell editions of a select number of ceramic pieces that he produced there in return for his use of the workshop. This also ensured that there would always be something affordable for sale in the workshop. In keeping with this, Picasso would have been very pleased that estimates in this sale start at £300. However, for those with more to spend, it is possible to pick up a unique Picasso Ceramic, hand-painted by the artist with an estimate of £40,000 to £60,000. Highlights include Oiseau no.96, a plate from an edition of 150, (estimate: £1,200-1,800), Petite chouette, an unglazed ceramic pitcher (estimate: £1,000-1,500) and Picador, a partially glazed ceramic ashtray (estimate: £500-700). Unique pieces include Visage de femme, 1949 (estimate: £40,000-60,000).

FOR THE WALLS
Picasso collaborated with the most renowned printers of the time such as Fort, Delatre, Lacourier, and Mourlot and he went on to produce vibrant and exuberant prints. Focusing on his favourite themes of myths, legends, bull fights and burlesque scenes, this sale provides the perfect opportunity to purchase a stunning Picasso for the home, with estimates for prints starting around £1,200. Highlights include etchings from Picasso’s famous print series La Suite Vollard, (estimates: £6,000 – 8,000), as well as several posters for his exhibitions at Vallauris in the 1950s such as Toros en Vallauris (estimate: £3,000-5,000).
