Following the exceptional results achieved in 2006, Christie’s is pleased to announce that it will be holding its fourth annual sale of Spanish Art on 3 October at The Westin Palace, Madrid. The sale will feature 155 works from prominent Spanish artists spanning the centuries from Old Master Pictures to 19th century art, to Modern and Contemporary art, which are estimated to fetch around €10-15 million overall. Christie’s Madrid will introduce “Christie’s Live”, the real-time multi-media auction service to the October sale. With this ground breaking initiative, Christie’s becomes the first international auction house in Spain to offer an online bidding platform to its clients.

“We are looking forward to this year’s exciting sale. The results obtained in 2006 demonstrated great enthusiasm for this category as we reached a €15 million record breaking total, confirming Christie’s position as market leaders in this category.” commented Juan Várez, Managing Director of Christie’s Spain.

The section devoted to Modern and Contemporary Art is the strongest to date, and contains the majority of the artists represented in the catalogue, with works from the major Spanish artistic movements of the modern era.

For the first time the sale in Madrid will offer works by Joan Miró (1893-1983). Of the three lots featured the most important is a work on paper, Femme, oiseaux from 1973, (estimate: €250,000-350,000).

The sale also includes a selection of works by Antonio Saura, two of which, Soledad, (estimate: €180,000-240,000) and Noa, (estimate: €120,000-180,000), were created in 1959 during the time he was leading the El Paso group in Madrid. A work by the Andalucian painter, José Guerrero, Aparición y Sombras, from 1966 is estimated €80,000-120,000.

Three important works by Spain’s premier contemporary artist, Miquel Barceló, are included in the catalogue: a self portrait from 1982 entitled Furor Penelis (estimate: €300,000-500,000), a study from 1986, Yellow and Water (estimate: €250,000-350,000), and a painting entitled Dejeuner sur l´herbe II (estimate: €350,000-550,000) comes from the famous white series he created while living and working in Mali.
