Romanian experts are analysing ashes found in a stove to see if they are the remains of the seven paintings that were stolen from the Kunsthal Rotterdam one year ago, according to several sources.

The owner of the stove is the mother of one of the suspects charged with stealing the works from the Dutch Museum, and it has been said that she burned them to protect her son.

When the paintings were stolen, Museum director Emily Ansenk declared that the theft was “every museum director’s worst nightmare“. Sadly, it seems that the nightmare has turned into a worse one.

The stolen paintings:
Pablo Picasso: “Harlequin Head” (1971)
Claude Monet: “Waterloo Bridge, London” (1901)
Claude Monet: “Charing Cross Bridge, London” (1901)
Henru Matisse: “Reading Girl in White and Yellow” (1919)
Paul Gauguin: “Femme devant une fenêtre ouverte, dite la Fiancée (Girl in Front of Open Window)” (1898)
Meyer de Haan: “Self-Portrait” (around 1890)
Lucian Freud: “Woman With Eyes Closed” (2002)
