Spain acquires a small painting by Velazquez Spain has acquired a small, $1.5 million panel by Diego de Velazquez, previously in a private collection]]>

A small panel by Spanish master Diego de Velázquez, entitled «Cabeza de Apóstol» («Head of an Apostle»), dated 1618-19, has been acquired by Spanish State for more than 1.2 million euro ($1.5 million). The work was previously owned by a Spanish noble family who had tried to sell the painting a few years ago. The painting is now in the Museum of Fine Arts of Sevilla (Seville)

This is the second Velázquez acquired for Spain in recent times. In 2003, «Portrait of Pope’s barber» was acquired for the Prado Museum for more than $25 million. Other works by the artist, as the «The tears of Saint Peter» are still in Spanish private collections.

Also related to Spanish old masters, Sotheby’s will offer an important group of Spanish painting in its sale of old master painting next January 25th. The auction includes Zurbaran’s important «Christ and the Virgin in the House of Nazareth» (estimated $1.5 -2 million), Goya’s small but intense «Portrait of the Actress Rita Luna (1770 – 1832)» (estimated $1.5 -2 million) and «The Annunciation» by El Greco (estimated $600,000 – 800,000)
