A 1904 photograph by Edward Steichen, entitled The pond - moonlight sold for $2.9 million at Sotheby's, smashing the previous auction record for a photograph, a mere $1.25 million set by Richard Prince's Untitled (Cowboy)
The 41- 50.8 cm . photograph, which remembers me of Ralph Albert Blakelock's nightscapes, was previously in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, owner of another of the three copies of the work.
